”THE LOSS OF POWER CAN KILL US; OR MAKE US KILLERS...” Grimmauld Place, not only the hideout for the Order but also a brief place he could stay time to time as he traveled to different places. He never stayed in one place to long, even if he was in a different country completely. However; tonight on this windy October evening he was in London, he had tracked a former colleague down earlier to confirm rumors he may have betrayed him. It was not the truth, he knew someone had found out that his family was alive but he was unsure of who and how they found out. Our tracks were covered, spells covered, but someone found out thought Arik as he walked down the streets of the Boroughs of Islington coming upon the secret number 12 Grimmauld Place. As he approached he could see the number 12 make itself visible as the wall stretched apart and a door appeared for him.
He quickly shut the door behind him, using his walking stick and limped to the kitchen. The old injury of his leg had been acting up from the extra traveling he had done today, he knew he needed to rest. He bumped into the kitchen it was empty, he was however unsure of anyone was elsewhere in the house. He took out his wand and started waving it as to start a cup of tea for him, his throat was dry as Egypt, and he had not been in Egypt for years. Taking the cup of tea the old man sat down at the table his walking stick leaning on the back of his chair. Someone has found my secret out, it is only a matter of time before they are discovered as well thought Arik his mind fearing for the worst of his family.

Scorpius was always trying to improve his skill levels and expand his knowledge when it came to protecting himself from the Dark Arts. The best way he had found to do this was to be well versed in the Dark Arts. The only way to know how to slay your dragon was to know everything about it. To know it’s strengths and it’s weak spots. Scorpius had already studied most of the books pertaining to this topic that were in the Hogwarts’ library. However, even though Death eaters had taken over the campus there was still very limited resources on the topic. Books of this matter were hard to come by because in the past they were usually kept hidden and used for secret purposes. Scorpius was racking his brain about where he might be able to find something that would help excel in his expertise.
Finally he was inspired to got to Grimmauld place. The home had once been owned by the Black family… a family he was related to and knew full well of their dark arts obsession. He remembered seeing some books on a shelf that had titles suggestion a dark nature. Scorpius also figured there were more like it hiding in there.
Scorpius made his way the secret meeting location of the Order. He entered the building and made his way down the old-thin hallway. He climbed up the steps to the bedrooms and began looking through the remnants of what once was, looking for books. As he was fumbling about a pile of stuff under one the beds he heard someone enter.
Scorpius made his way back down the steps, following the sound into the kitchen. He was careful to not step where he knew the floor boards squeak. He wanted to be sure it wasn’t a death eater before showing his face. At first he only saw the back of the man but he recognized who it was. Scorpius made a fist and knocked gently on the doorway. ”Hey Arik”

”THE LOSS OF POWER CAN KILL US; OR MAKE US KILLERS...” The old man took sips of his tea as he closed his eyes thinking about the different people who may have found out. He had started first the old friends of him and Gerald who may have figured it out and expected the plan, but they did not know, nor did they lie. He knew they did not lie being able to look in their memories with such ease, considering they weren’t Occlumens, he could tell if they lied to him. Someone on the other side figured this out thought Arik with a shake of his head, always believing he had covered his steps perfectly that only an old friend may have been able to figure it out, not a Death Eater. His thoughts were interrupted by a light knock on the door from the hallway, his eyes quickly turned into the direction. He had believed he was alone in the house, and he had not known someone had approached the door to the kitchen either.
Scorpius Malfoy was standing in the doorway, he had greeted Arik by the time he had looked at who it was. Instantly, the older man could feel strange, not rage, but anxiety that the man was not someone to be trusted. His family name brings doubt thought Arik. ”Scorpius…Malfoy” spoke Arik, the disdain for the name Malfoy was clearly visible in the tone. ”I was unaware anyone else is here, your family must have taught you some skill, being able to sneak up on me.” spoke Arik, he was completely aware of what happened to the young man’s parents and grandparents being tortured to complete insanity. A part of him felt sorry for the young man but, with everything going on trust was very slim to go around especially those with family of the Dark Arts.

Scorpius often found it very hard to read Arik. The man was old, gruff and had the best damn poker face he’d ever seen. However, he knew very well the guy didn’t trust him. It was no fault of his own. He’d always been a straight arrow. His mother had raised him well despite her many obstacles with the rest of the family. Scorpius understood and accepted why people hated him. His family was far from perfect and had made many mistakes. Mistakes that contributed to many horrible things. Even so, when he heard the way Arik emphasized his last name, it hurt. Scorpius was always trying to prove himself to everyone. To show everyone he fell a lot farther from the tree than they’d expect.
Arik then stated that he was unaware that anyone was in the house and that his family must have taught him some skill. He knew it was probably another stab at his family being death eaters… or had been death eaters. Was it not enough they were tortured to insanity? No matter what side you were on, the punishments and violence was never enough to compensate past loss. That was the problem with society. Everyone was always so bent on revenge and fighting fire with fire that no one ever thought to just let stuff be in the past. Or at least this is how he often felt about it. Scorpius took Arik’s words with a grain of salt.
Scorpius began talking with his eyes at his feet. He hated contention of any sort. Especially, when it wasn’t necessary. ”I’m sorry sir… I didn’t mean to startle you… or intrude” He looked up at Arik now. He wasn’t afraid of Arik, but felt the best way to deal with him was to show him respect. The guy fed on it and Scorpius didn’t mind giving it… for the most part. ”I was just looking for some new reading material. Trying to study up on my dueling abilities… I won’t be here long, I’ll be out of your hair soon, promise” Scorpius wonder if he dare ask Arik was up to… ”If you don’t mind me asking, sir, what are you up to?”

”THE LOSS OF POWER CAN KILL US; OR MAKE US KILLERS...” For being a Malfoy, he sure was different from his father, especially of his grandfather. The way he spoke and looked at the ground, made Arik wonder if the man before him was really genuine. Don’t be foolish, they are snakes laying in the grass waiting to strike thought Arik as he just focused fully on the man before him who spoke. The man before him could be just one of those biding his time, except he was more able to act genuine or maybe he was frightened by the older man. Arik earned a reputation of having no mercy on dark wizards when he was leading the Aurors and magical law enforcement department. He pushed for the use of unforgivable curses if needed be by Aurors, even used his ability as a Legilimens to personally interrogate people even when he was busy running the entire department. ”Well the house is open up to the Order and I guess you are a part of it” spoke Arik turning away from the younger man after he spoke and taking a sip of his tea.
He could tell the younger man was trying to be respectful to him when speaking, as he went on in what he was doing at the time. However; the nagging thought that he was a spy forced Arik into seeing it just as part of the act. I’m sure much of the dueling in this house will be focused around dark arts…it does come in handy I’d say” spoke Arik however he did not turn around when he spoke staring off into space as he just drank his tea. He turned around however when the man had asked what he was up to, in the most respectful way that he could. ”I was trying to drinking my tea, is there something you would like Malfoy?” asked Arik this time his tone showed nothing but disdain and distrust of the man. Time to get to the bottom of this thought Arik believing he would finally find out if this man was truthful or not.

Scorpius could never catch a break with this guy. No matter how hard Scorpius tried to show he wasn’t a threat… that he wasn’t a clone or a repeat of what his father and grandparents had been… it was never enough for Arik. There was no convincing him to change his mind or ease up on his understandable but no longer necessary harsh judgments. Arik turned away from him and simply stated the house was open to Order members. That he was. Scorpius just nodded at that, not wanting to say something that would set the guy off but part of him wanted to just tell him straight… tell him how it was. How his life was and who he was because of it. Scorpius was never meant to be a death eater. But he doubt even if he tried to explain his life story to Arik, that he’d listen or even care. Arik would probably assume is was more of his Malfoy trickery.
Arik told him that the dueling at grimmauld’s was focused on dark arts which he found handy. Scorpius squinted a bit as he tried to determine if this was a fleeting moment absent of animosity. But then he thought better of it. Most likely it was another sneaky way of Arik trying to catch Scorpius in a lie about his allegiance. He kept his mouth shut, unsure of how to respond without Arik trying to pin him down as a death eater traitor.
It didn’t surprise Scorpius when Arik tried to snub him off by telling Scorp he was drinking his tea, followed by asking him if there was something he’d like in his regular callous condescending way. Scorpius laughed to himself. What did this guy want from him. He knew full well. Arik wanted Malfoy gone… not just from the house but from the Order. Arik wanted Scorpius to admit to the crime of being a Malfoy which for Arik would mean he was guilty of much more. ”Sir… All I want is for you to stop treating me like I’m a tiger ready to pounce on you the second you turn your back. I’m not going to try and apologize for all the shit my family has done. That’s their downfalls… not mine. I know what they’ve done can’t be pardoned… but you have to know I had nothing to do with any of that… most of it happened long before I was even born. I wasn’t raised to be a monster and I promise I’m not going to turn into one either. I know it’s hard for you to forgive and forget. I’m not asking you to do that. I’m just asking you to see me… for who I am… and not for what my family did in the past. I’m sorry.. I really am… from the bottom of my heart… I’m sorry for whatever it was my family did that affect you… your family… friends … loved ones… But I’m not that guy. I’m fighting on your side… for the same cause and I’d just appreciate it if you didn’t keep treating me like I was dirt on your shoe” perhaps that was a bit much… perhaps he should have held back… perhaps this was all going to end very badly but he had to get it out. However, he finished his rant by adding a respectful ”sir” at the end.

”THE LOSS OF POWER CAN KILL US; OR MAKE US KILLERS...” He couldn’t help but start laughing at the speech the younger Malfoy had went on about how he could be trusted, how he was on their side. How he wanted Arik to treat him not like he was some crouching tiger going to pounce on him. He had scoffed immediately at that metaphor, picturing the younger man trying to get an upper hand on him. Dead before he would hit the ground thought Arik with a slight smile as he just watched the man go on with the speech, his laughing had stopped by now. Shaking his head he thought it was a passionate defense from a spy for the Death Eaters trying to win over the former Head of Magical Law Enforcement. It would be a perfect plan as the old man saw, he win over Arik support, and eventually everyone would have to trust him. Wouldn’t the old man with years of experience fighting dark wizards, have superior judgment? He would know best, as far as he saw it would go. Too bad I know your plan fool thought Arik giving a little sigh as the man finally finished.
”I don’t treat you like dirt on my shoe…your much worse than that. Just because you’re a different generation of the Malfoys, your still one of them” spoke Arik his voice was cold and sharp like a dagger. He put his head out and direct the man toward a chair across from him, to take a seat. If this man wanted to prove to him, he was genuine than very well they would see if he was who he was. ”You’re an Occulmens Malfoy, rather talented as I cannot see your lies nor what you really are. It’s a perfect skill for a spy…I’m sure your grandparents would want you to know such skill”spoke Arik he had tried a few times in the past, at glances to see if he could even test the boundaries of the young man’s mind. That’s when he discovered he was not unprotected, at all but rather protected and he could not exactly tell when the man is lying or not. ”Sorry that your family supported Voldemort, are you? The life’s they took and ruined, being tremendous cowards near the end, are you sorry for that?” asked Arik, his question sarcastic and rhetorical.
He scoffed again as his thought idea of the man truly being on their side as ridiculous at the best. ”Your word is nothing to me, you will have to earn any trust and respect you want from me. However; if you betray us I will kill you and wipe the entire Malfoy family from the world. Do you understand me?” said Arik, this time the voice was so deadly as it was if the man could never ever be a member of the Order, let alone a leader. The years of violence, and death, and loss of power had made him this way.

The way Arik started laughing at him was very unsettling and rude. The old man was so dry and hard from years of service and hunting dark wizards… Scorpius wondered how much humanity was left in him. He’d been chasing these guys for so long that he’d turned a cold heartless dementor. He was always looking for the next soul to devour. Scorpius listened to Arik continue to rip him to shreds, berate him and belittle him. He felt totally deflated. He didn’t really know what to say. There wasn’t anything he could say that would change Arik’s mind. The guy wouldn’t even hear him out.
Arik told Scorpius that he was even worse than the dirt on his shoe. Well we shot that elephant at least, Scorpius thought. Now that we have that confession, we both are on the same page about how Arik feels about me. Scorpius sighed. ”I’m sorry you feel that way, sir” Scorpius commented. ”I may have the same last name… but I’m more than that sir.” Arik mocked him for the reason he was an occlumens. ”Is it so wrong my grandparents wanted me to be able to protect myself. To keep myself safe?” This guy was being really harsh on him. He even had the nerve to scoff at him for being sorry about the wrong doings his family had done. ”I am sorry, Sir” Scorpius said a bit bitterly. He really was. It was bad enough he had to feel guilty for shit he didn’t do and have it basically stamped on his forehead, let alone have dicks like Arik Waters stuff shit in his face about it when he never had anything to do with it in the first place. It was wrong that he had to be tormented constantly for something that happened long before he was born.
The final straw was when Arik told Scorpius that his word was nothing to him. That he had to prove himself (as he hadn’t already been doing that all his life? Had he ever done anything wrong? No. Did people still act like he was a fucking demented killer? Yes. It was never enough). Arik then threatened him not only his life, but his family’s as well. Scorpius hated fighting. Hated contention. Hated all of it. He was a peaceful guy. He often let people step on him, just so he could end whatever friction was going on. But today, he was just really fed up with. ”Nothing I do or don’t do will ever make you see me clearly. You refuse to see me for who I am. You choose to see me, the way you want to see…. If you are so convinced that I’m a traitor why haven’t you just killed me?! Just do it now! Might as well!” Scorpius was daring Arik to act. Was this talker gonna walk the walk? Or just talk the talk?

”THE LOSS OF POWER CAN KILL US; OR MAKE US KILLERS...” The fool in front of him really thought his words were going to do something, or did he just hope he could breakthrough to him. The old man’s face showed nothing but coldness and hatred not just for the man in front of him, but the whole Malfoy clan. His assurance that he was more than just the family name and that he was his own person fell on death ears with this particular order leader. He didn’t want to hear any more from the man and soon he was regretting of making him sit down to have this conversation. His question of whether it was wrong for his grandparents to want the young man to be able to protect himself, he just shook his head. ”Considering who they were, I doubt it was for protection.” retorted Arik quickly. He was sure the man was using the skill to protect his true identity of helping the Death Eaters, something a Malfoy would be perfect at, in Arik eyes. It was clear he possessed nothing but disdain for the entire family, he could not handle death eaters who turned to be cowards in the end. As the old man saw if you made that choice than so be it and to own up to it and run like cowards in the end. He scoffed again as the kid once again apologized-yes he was a kid- as he saw.
He sat up a little straighter in his chair as the younger Malfoy started to defend himself in a way of basically daring Arik to end his life now. A slight even grin appeared across his face and in swift movement the old man had his wand out pointed directly at Scorpius as he sat across from him. A little part of him wanted to do it and gladly accept the request or demand that was just made upon him. However; he knew he could not take such action without proving to the other members of the Order that Scorpius was truly a wolf in sheep clothing. He smirked placing his wand down on the table next to him. ”You are wrong in your theory Malfoy…I believe because you not have shown me in a way that you’re not working for them. Just because you became a Professor, were raised differently I am supposed to believe that you are completely devoted to helping us. If you don’t betray us I’m sure you will run and become a coward like your grandfather” spoke Arik rather in a sharp tone as if he was slashing a sword at him.
”You’re not dead because others believe you, others which let me point out have nowhere near the experience I do as fighting dark wizards and thinking just like them. The Death Eaters once again won because they had people in high places, like the bitch at the Department of Mysteries plotting our downfalls for years. Until I see actual action from you showing you’re not them than all your talk is cheap…” said Arik after finishing his little speech he slowly sipped his tea waiting for what the young man would say to defend himself now, his wand still next to him laying upon the table.

Everything that Arik spat back at him was like having acid sprayed at his face. It stung to the core. He didn’t want to feel hurt. That made him weak. He didn’t want to care that this guy hated him so much. But it did. He had always been sensitive to all the negativity that seemed to follow him. Scorpius wasn’t a crier but he did feel things really deeply. When he realized the extent of this man’s hate and distrust for him he was sad, mad, felt it was unfair… all the feelings were happening. Scorpius didn’t want to say or do something he’d regret though. He didn’t want to come down to this guy’s level. He didn’t want to be filled with the hate that obviously lived in every crevice of this man’s soul.
When Arik had said that he doubted that his occlumens ability was taught to him for protection his eye twitched a bit. Of course it was for protection. He was a smart guy… he should realize that his parents would know that both death eaters and order members and everyone in-between would have it out for him. That the world was against him long before he was a even a thought or a possibility. The Arik continued to say how Scorpius had done nothing in his mind to prove that he wasn’t a death eater. Scorpius hadn’t just become a Professor for kicks. He did it not only because he loved mentoring and teaching… but so he could spy on the death eaters for the Order and to protect all those kids if anymore fight went down at the castle. Everything he did was for them. He hardly did anything for himself. He was a very selfless person but still no matter what he did everyone saw him as a selfish coward the way they saw his family.
Arik continued to rub in the insults. He told Scorpius that he didn’t have experience fight dark wizards like he did. This was true. He didn’t. But he had been around them and trained by their kind all his life. Scorpius would never like to admit it but he understood them and new their kind better than most of the Order Members ever would. Arik told him that Scorpius was basically alive just because he had made others believe in him. He didn’t make people do anything. He just was who he was.
Scorpius was just mad at Arik. The guy always tried to act like he was this god. That he was some saint that was fighting for the right cause on the right side. However, Scorpius knew that Mr. Waters only gave a fuck about his family. Scorpius didn’t have faith that this guy would be around helping the Order if his family wasn’t on the run. Just like the Death Eaters, he was only looking out for his and himself. Scorpius had enough of his BS and didn’t care to hear anymore of it. He was done trying to prove himself to this guy. He wasn’t worth it. He wasn’t sure why he’d cared so much in the first place.
Scorpius sighed and said ”Well you have validated to me that you’re nothing but a bitter, blind and backwards old man. I’m not sure why they let you in the Order... You don’t care about anyone but yourself. You don’t live and fight because you want to make things better. You live for revenge… the darkness in your heart is eating you from the inside out. I’m done here… I don’t need to prove anything to someone as cold as you. My talk isn’t cheap. It’s free. I’m real. I’m not trying to put a hood over your eyes or stab you in the back. I’m just telling you who I am … what I am… but you’re no longer in touch with reality. You’re too far gone… to far in the darkness of your heart. It’s sad really. Enjoy your tea, Mr. Waters” he said before turning to leave.
