Our story takes place in a present day alternate universe of the world as we know it. Magic has always existed, although mortals were largely unaware of it as it ran just beneath the surface of normal society for most of the world's history. In recent years, supernatural activity and the species that cause it have been brought further into the light. What was once regarded as nothing more than myth and fable has become a very real possibility in people's lives.
The establishment of Dragon's Crown Island as a haven for the supernatural is largely due to a large prestigious school that is located on the island, called Dragon's Crown Academy, where people from all over the world seek out instruction and protection. The Academy provides an education on the underlying world and assistance in controlling the abilities that have awoken in mortals who once thought themselves ordinary. It currently houses around 200 students, accepts all types of known beings and does not have a limit on the age of those who seek its assistance.
Taylor Kinsley is the headmaster of Dragon’s Crown Academy, sitting on the head of the school board that runs it. Taylor also owns the entirety of Dragon’s Crown Island, although the affairs of Ash Mill and the adjacent hamlets and farmland are controlled by a council that has been elected by the residents.
Taylor is greatly respected on the island, as he is believed to be the only known Dragonborn that also bears the powers of an Elemental Shifter, a combination that was thought to be impossible. He gained his respect not only by his passion for re-purposing the island as a haven for beings like him, but also by offering education at the academy at no charge to its students. He has been known to use his abilities to protect the people of the island, striving to always provide a safe environment in which supernatural beings can flourish. He oversees the general operation of classes, including the execution of detentions and planning various activities throughout the school. Although he appears intimidating at times, he generally has a friendly demeanor and even teaches classes occasionally, busy schedule willing. Some doubt his validity as an Elemental Shifter, although his demonstration of such powers generally quiets any dissension.
Ash Mill is a town with a population of just over 2,000 and although it is not densely populated in relation to the size of the island, all of the world's modern amenities can be found there. The town has a small community feel to it and its residents, as they are made up of nearly all supernatural beings and their families, are generally accepting of all walks of life.
