Ever since her parents had died, she’d felt as though she didn’t belong anywhere. Strangely enough, even though the school she had once loved with her entire heart had been taken by her parents murderers, she felt that she was at home when at Hogwarts. Her grandparents had tried to keep her from returning, but there was nothing the two of them could have done to keep her from continuing with her education. She truly was a Ravenclaw at heart, that one. However, she’d still hoped that her younger sister had stayed away, but stubbornness was a common trait in the Truman family. It was what had gotten her parents killed in the first place.
A slight wince escaped her softly painted lips as she remembered her grandmother’s letter she had received just before Hogwarts had been taken. At that moment, she could have sworn she had felt the elderly woman’s tears dampening the blouse she had been wearing. The echo of her steps in the empty hallways stopped as she took a deep breath. With her eyes closed, she did as she always did, pushing the memory to the back of her mind and mentally locking it away until she was able to deal with such a thing, if she ever was. For now, however, she couldn’t let them know how much she was hurting. She couldn’t let anyone know how deeply wounded she was. They’d take advantage of it, that she could be certain of.
What she couldn’t be certain of was her step as she started climbing the stairs that led from the library to the Ravenclaw common room. The only thing she could do to keep her mind off of the past, recently, was to bury herself in her schoolwork. Her days, including the weekends, would be spent with studying, and more studying until she felt too tired to do anything else, even think. She’d often then sit with her younger sister, listening to her talk about her day. Even though this routine seemed boring to everybody else, she was content with it. She was content with waiting for things to change, being too scared to act herself.
With the books blocking her view, she missed a stair and dropped everything on the ground, her hands just barely stopping her cracking her skull open on the staircase. She pushed herself into a crouching position, replacing the loose strands of her light brown hair behind her ears.
