Delphine the perfectionist, to whom little things mattered. If she'd held the newspaper, would it have rustled in that moment? It was only because he knew her and because he was looking in that direction that he saw her hand shake as she picked up her juice and realised the significance of it. There were, he'd come to understand, only a few things that could bring a loss of control like that on - her parents being the main one. Not the only one, he'd willingly admit that he'd made that mistake in the beginning, but most of the time. As to why here and now, he had no answer. His trauma was of a different nature but he'd imagined it was the same, sometimes a scent long forgotten, a brush of cloth or a jarring note of speech was all it took to bring back a memory of being small and afraid and alone with such force that for that moment you were, once more, small and afraid and alone.
And as she was, all he could do was smile and affectionately press his arm against hers, a silent gesture of solidarity, support, to bring her back to him if she needed it. People grieved in their own time, in their own way, and as much as he wanted her to talk to him and be sure that her methods of coping weren't hurting her all he could do was make sure that she knew he was there and felt safe with him. Back her into a corner and she'd only come out fighting, which would do neither of them any good at all.
"Can't take all the credit for that, the castle helps." Locryn replied with a grin. Most first years struggled with the changing interior of the building but twelve year old Locryn - his birthday was so early on in the school year that he'd barely been eleven at Hogwarts - had been something else. He'd cheerfully blamed it on having spent most of his life outside - stick him in the middle of a moor or a marsh or even the forbidden forest and he'd get to wherever he needed to be, easy, but stick him in the middle of a castle and ask him to do the same? Honestly, if Delphine hadn't taught him the point me spell he'd still have been turning up on the charms corridor when he was wanted in transfiguration in his second year and he remained convinced that to this day the castle tried to help as well. What she said next got her arm a small nudge that was far more playful in nature. "You know I'll pop up at the faintest hint of you having important things to discuss." And wanting to discuss it with him - admittedly he was not the best person to discuss her more advanced charms work with seeing as he had little idea what she was talking about or why it was important.
Her parents, then. He'd long since held the impression that they were never far from her thoughts, and how could they be? Her grief had sunk into her bones, made her who she was, and some days he could almost fancy that he could see it flowing from her bones with the fresh blood cells, freezing her with every beat of her heart and refusing to let her breathe and grow. Even if immediately afterwards, always immediately afterwards, she busied herself with something in the here and now, he saw such cracks as a good thing. Maybe one day, when they were free of Hogwarts, she'd be able to finally talk. He'd just have to find a way of being here when she wanted to, even if it meant sprinting back from half way around the world. "Thank you." He said, softly and seriously, because what else was he meant to say to something he knew had cost her so dearly?
"I'll go fetch it. Meet me by the main doors?" He took his cue from her business, getting to his feet as she rounded up her possessions. His own were still stuffed in his bag over at the Hufflepuff table, trustingly left there in the knowledge that his housemates were by and large too nice to do anything to it.

When they'd first met, he'd envied Delphine her parents. Both alive, both interested in her and - as far as he'd ever been able to tell - both utterly in love with her. Now he was quietly grateful that the only unusual thing about his mother's death was her young age at the time. 'In the midst of life, there is death', Mrs Weathers had said as she allowed Locryn to assist in laying his mother out, and as terrible as it had been it had felt natural. Her friends and family had descended on them when the end drew near, Mrs Weathers had been summoned, the traditions - from the freezing of the clocks at the moment of her death to the night long vigil - had been observed. As sad as it was, death had not been treated as some terrible unknown but a part of the world they lived in. It had its own rhythm and set of prescribed responses within the community, for Locryn at least it hadn't been shuffled away and perhaps that was why he didn't fear death and the dead. If not positive exactly his first interactions with them had taken place in an atmosphere of acceptance, support and love.
There had been nothing natural about the deaths of Delphine's parents. As far as he knew, her first experience of death - of human death at least - had been when she came home to find them murdered. There'd been nothing natural about it, no warning, one day he'd seen her smiling and laughing and the next crushed by loss and choked by grief. No family had gathered to witness their passing, no traditions had been observed, far from death being in the midst of life it had rent it asunder and left only pain and misery in its wake. Instead of it being a sadness accepted and understood by the community they lived in, it had marked Delphine as something other, touched by tragedy and misfortune, and when he looked at her he didn't always see the cold, ambitious seventeen year old but a shivering girl some years younger, rocking back and forth with tear tracks on her face.
It was like that with Jem as well. He'd like to be able to say that he stayed with Delphine purely because he was loyal and kind and loved the girl she became as intensely as he'd loved the girl she'd been, and while he'd like to think that each was true he knew that it was not the whole truth. The simple fact was, he'd lived most of his life surrounded by people brutalised by loss, twisted by grief and crippled by memories. He'd no idea how he'd have responded to Delphine if he hadn't, he liked to think that he'd have stayed with her, but as he was who he was and his family were who they were it hadn't occurred to him to cut his losses and leave when she withdrew into herself. As different as she was she was still Delphine, after all, and he didn't think that she truly wanted to be alone for a moment. She was still his friend and he was still going to look out for her, no matter how great or small the task.
"You memorise timetables, by some miracle I just turn up in the right place at roughly the right time." He shrugged easily. They had a very different approach to life and always had done, Locryn favouring mild chaos and Delphine favouring order. It had gotten worse in the last four years, or at least Locryn thought it had. It bothered him, a little, Delphine getting so very focused on her routines, but it had never seemed like a good moment to try to raise the issue and he could well imagine the look he'd get if he mentioned grief-related OCD behaviours to her. "And I wouldn't force it on you." He added, glancing down at the Daily Prophet on the table before her to see if there were any interesting titles. Nothing really caught his eye and his full attention flicked back to his friend accordingly. "I'd just stand by the doors holding it and looking reproachful."

Locryn, despite what his father had always said about him, wasn't short on friends. Thankfully none of them were quite as murderous as Jem's had been, but there was at present one particular friend who struck him as being in desperate need of looking after. Or out for, seeing as she had an independent streak worse than his and would, he knew without needing to think about it, be at the least irritated and at worst furious at his trying to mother hen her. Not that he thought he'd be much good at it, considering that he'd thought it was a good idea to show the younger students a rough approximation of what a corpse candle would look like by shutting them in a dark dormitory, holding a lighted candle under his chin and rolling his eyes back until only the whites showed.
There'd been nightmares and the Hufflepuff prefects were not impressed with him.
Still, things had settled down again now, at least with regards to the interactions of Hufflepuff students because the weather outside looked like it was going to stop being threatening and start being ghastly any minute. Given the temperature in the Entrance Hall the dark grey skies might even produce hail instead of rain and he felt nothing but sympathy for the poor fourth year girl who declared that she had care of magical creatures before lunch and herbology after.
Herbology made him think of his friend in need of looking out for though, she'd spooked him more than once by seeming to know his timetable better than he did but all he knew was that she was taking herbology, which took place outside. Probably in a greenhouse on days like today, granted, but she'd still have to get down there and it was still likely to be freezing. As soon as the post arrived, signalling the beginning of the end of breakfast, he got to his feet and started looking for her, confident that he wasn't missing post as hardly anyone ever wrote to him and he hadn't ordered anything by mail recently.
Given that he knew her favoured spot on her house table it didn't take him long to find her and - as he had done numerous times before without the sky caving in on them - plonked himself down beside her with his back to the table and his legs cluttering up the aisle. "Morning, Delphine." He said, leaning back and turning so he could see her face. "Two questions for you, are you going outside today, and if so do you want my oilskin?" The oilskin cloak was, like most of his possessions, inherited from someone else. In this case an eccentric but essentially harmless wizard who'd spent a good part of his life sailing the north sea in the hopes of finding sea serpents. All he'd ever had to show for it was an oarfish, which the muggles also knew about and had never attacked a boat or, so far as they knew, eaten a sailor.

It sat up, the movement forcing air from the lungs in a groaning, whistling sound and unseeing eyes stared at the distant horizon as long, skeletal legs swung down. Its feet touched the ground and without hesitation - with a surprisingly human motion - the creature got to its feet, then seemed to freeze.
Locryn started breathing again, utterly unaware of the dark goo dripping from his fingers as he stared at the creature before him. It looked pitiful next to some of his teacher's creations, small and ragged, but it was his. It was there. It was real. He'd really done it. "I think I get Frankenstein now." He breathed and at the sound of his voice the inferuis looked around, head twisting until the eyes were focused on him. There was no intelligence there and Locryn hadn't expected it. "You're not going to run away screaming, are you?" Jem asked, utterly unimpressed as his descendent shot him a dark, annoyed look.
The moment of awe and wonder might have passed but that still left an excitable few hours as Locryn, under Jem's guidance, put the new inferius through its paces. True, it jerked terribly as it moved, tended to fall over and walk into things, couldn't grasp any task with more than two steps to it and the preservation work was going to need shoring up every few years or it'd fall to bits within a decade or two, but it still worked. He'd still proven himself to be a worthy successor to someone in his family. He'd still proven that he wasn't a complete waste of space.
He'd also proven that he was, as his father feared, a dark wizard and all those attempts to beat it out of him had been for naught.
"Between this and the postcognition she'll almost certainly accept you now, you know." Jem, perhaps sensing the sudden train of thought as Locryn paused in his examination of his inferius's dexterity (poor), broke off examining the way the bones of its shoulder were grating together when they shouldn't be. "There's only a handful I know of who can do this under twenty." A ghostly hand waved at the inferuis as Locryn, refraining from pointing out that very few had both the motivation and an opportunity, went back to trying to get the inferius to grip an old quill properly. It ended up crushed in a grip that might have broken a finger or two. "They're going to find out." Jem added after a short pause, when Locryn had removed the quill and given the still grasping hand a stress ball to hold so the remaining nails didn't tear the palm to pieces. "But on my terms." He said with a tight smile, because sadly Jem was right. As Locryn was not content to keep this locked up in Tregelles, had the sheer audacity to think of apprenticing himself to a modern master of necromancy in far off Russia, then this was not going to stay quiet for very much longer. |
